"articleBody" : "Introduction Exception handling is one of the basic yet advance features that Oracle GoldenGate can do. This allows the Oracle GoldenGate processes to keep running when errors happen and time for administrators to evaluate the errors. This blog post is meant to show the basics of exception handling by using a macro within the Oracle GoldenGate (Microservices) environment. A word of caution needs to be given though. This approach will not work on Oracle GoldenGate Service (GGS) within OCI. This is due to not having access to the underlying host where the parameter files and trail files are stored. Hopefully, in the coming time, the Oracle GoldenGate Product Team will allow this. Yet, please remember that GGS is a “service”. Exception Table(s) Info An exception table is one of two things: A matching table to the table being replicated. A master exception table that is used to track where the exception happens. Exception Table This version of the exception table (master table approach) will capture details of an error based on the information that is passed in the trail file when the error occurred. This information can be used to identify where and what trail file should be reviewed to identify the data that may not have been processed. accept ggate_user char prompt 'GoldenGate User Name: ' drop table &&ggate_user..exceptions / create table &&ggate_user..exceptions ( EXCEPTION_ID NUMBER GENERATED BY DEFAULT ON NULL AS IDENTITY START WITH 100 , EXCEPTION_TS TIMESTAMP(6) default systimestamp , EXCEPTION_STATUS VARCHAR2(15) , REP_NAME VARCHAR2(8) , TABLE_NAME VARCHAR2(61) , BEFORE_AFTER VARCHAR2(32) , OPTYPE VARCHAR2(20) , TRANSIND VARCHAR2(20) , LOGCSN NUMBER , FILESEQNO NUMBER , FILERBA NUMBER , LOGRBA NUMBER , LOGPOSITION NUMBER , COMMITTIMESTAMP TIMESTAMP(6) , ERRTYPE VARCHAR2(20) , ERRNO NUMBER , DBERRMSG VARCHAR2(4000) ,CONSTRAINT exception_pk PRIMARY KEY (EXCEPTION_ID) ) / Show Errors Exception Macro The exceptions macro will be processed by the replicat and used to populate the exceptions table. Within an Oracle GoldenGate (Microservices) deployment (non-OCI), a macro should be placed in a directory where it can be referenced by the replicat. In this instance, the $OGG_ETC_HOME/conf/ogg directory can be used. Simply add a sub-directory called mac or dirmac. Within this directory, add the file “exceptions.mac” and the contents should be as follows: MACRO #exception_handler PARAMS(#ggate_user) BEGIN , TARGET #ggate_user.exceptions , COLMAP ( exception_id = 0 , exception_ts = , exception_status = , rep_name = @GETENV (GGENVIRONMENT, GROUPNAME) , table_name = @GETENV (GGHEADER, TABLENAME) , before_after = @GETENV (GGHEADER, BEFOREAFTERINDICATOR) , optype = @GETENV (LASTERR, OPTYPE) , transind = @GETENV ( GGHEADER, TRANSACTIONINDICATOR) , logcsn = @GETENV (TRANSACTION, CSN) , fileseqno = @GETENV (RECORD, FILESEQNO) , filerba = @GETENV (RECORD, FILERBA) , logrba = @GETENV (GGHEADER, LOGRBA) , logposition = @GETENV (GGHEADER, LOGPOSITION) , committimestamp = @GETENV (GGHEADER, COMMITTIMESTAMP) , errtype = @GETENV (LASTERR, ERRTYPE) , errno = @GETENV (LASTERR, DBERRNUM) , dberrmsg = @GETENV (LASTERR, DBERRMSG) ) , INSERTALLRECORDS , EXCEPTIONSONLY END; Update Replicat Once the exception macro is in place; the replicat needs to be updated to reflect the location and how errors should be handled. This is done with the INCLUDE and REPERROR parameters. In the parameter file as example below, this will configure exceptions for all schemas/tables in replication. The last thing that needs to be done is to write corresponding map statements that will use the mac. REPLICAT REPPDB2 USERIDALIAS TargetPDB DOMAIN OracleGoldenGate INCLUDE mac/exceptions.mac REPERROR(DEFAULT, EXCEPTION) REPERROR(DEFAULT2, ABEND) DDLERROR DEFAULT IGNORE DDL DDLOPTIONS UPDATEMETADATA MAP DEVDB_PDB1.TPC.*, TARGET TPC.*; MAP DEVDB_PDB1.TPC.*, #exception_handler(ggate); MAP DEVDB_PDB1.TPC1.*, TARGET TPC1.*; MAP DEVDB_PDB1.TPC1.*, #exception_handler(ggate); Now you can capture errors while processing is on-going without a replicat abending.",

"articleBody" : "When installed, Oracle GoldenGat (Microservices) will set up “services” that require a port number for access. For the first run of the Oracle GoldenGate Configuration Assistant (OGGCA), the assistant will create the ServiceManager (1 port) and the first deployment (5 ports). That means six ports would need to be opened on a firewall to run a single Oracle GoldenGate (Microservices) deployment. This only increases by five ports for each deployment built under a single ServiceManager. To address this, an open-source solution called NGINX allows all the ports within the deployment to be consolidated to a single port. The single port that can be used with NGINX is either 80 (HTTP) or 443 (HTTPS); which will enable Oracle GoldenGate (Microservices) to be used over a standard firewall port Downloading Binaries The NGINX binaries need to be downloaded regardless of where you install Oracle GoldenGate (Microservices). For Oracle Enterprise Linux, I documented the process here. When you start to expand the installation base for Microservices, the installation of NGINX becomes similar yet different. To install NGINX on an RedHat Linux 7.2 , the following steps should be followed. 1. SSH into the RedHat instance $ ssh @ 2. Sudo to Root $ sudo su – 3. Install and Confirm installation $ yum -y install nginx && yum list install nginx After installing the NGINX the next thing that must be done is to configure it against the Oracle GoldenGate (Microservices) environment. Configure NGINX Oracle has made it easy for Oracle GoldenGate administrators to configure the NGINX interface after the installation. They provided a script called “ReverseProxySettings” in the $OGG_HOME/lib/utl directory. This script is used to build the Nginx configuration file based on the deployments running on the AWS EC2 node. The steps to configure the reverse proxy are as follows: 1. Change to the Reverse Proxy directory under $OGG_HOME $ cd $OGG_HOME/lib/utl/reverseproxy 2. Run ReverseProxySettings with options (unsecure access) $ ./ReverseProxySettings -u oggadmin -P -o ogg.conf http://localhost: 3. Copy the config file to the NGINX directory $ sudo cp ogg.conf /etc/nginx/conf.d/nginx.conf 4. Create a dummy cert $ sudo sh /etc/ssl/certs/make-dummy-cert /etc/nginx/ogg.pem 5. Start NGINX $ sudo nginx & 6. Test/validate NGINX config $ sudo nginx -t 7. Reload NGINX $ sudo nginx -s reload 8. Access the ServiceManager and other services without port numbers Note: The ogg.pem must be downloaded and uploaded to your local cert wallet to access via a web browser. End Result Once everything with the NGINX is configured, Oracle GoldenGate (Microservices) can be accessed by URL using the standard port of 80 (HTTP) or 443 (HTTPS). This enables Oracle GoldenGate (Microservices) environments to be accessed over standard firewall rules.",

Prior to Oracle Database 12c finding a list of default users within the database was always a pain. In Oracle Database 12c or later, this has become much simpler. Oracle introduced a column on the *_users views that allows the end users to identify what users are maintained by Oracle. This column name is ORACLE_MAINTAINED. The value of the column is either “N” or “Y”. If it is “Y”, then user account is maintained by Oracle. A simple query of the ALL_USERS view will return about 57 different accounts that are maintained by Oracle in Oracle Database 19c (Autonomous Data Warehouse). select * from all_users where oracle_maintained = 'Y' order by username; For more information, the Oracle Database 19c docs can be referenced here.",

The approach taken is to ensure that it is installed via the -silent process making it easier to install when looking at CI/CD processes and needing to get the agent installed quickly. This post is also intended to be high-level notes for myself for me to look at later if needed. The steps to get Oracle GoldenGate Monitor Agent installed are as follows: 1. Download the Oracle GoldenGate Monitor Agent from OTN (here) 2. To install NGINX on an Amazon Web Services (AWS) EC2 instance, the following steps should be followed. For more details, you can also reference this blog post on installing Nginx -> here or here. 1. SSH into the AWS EC2 instance $ ssh -I ~/.ssh/rd-usf-tst.pem ec2-user@ 2. Sudo to Root $ sudo su – 3. Use Amazon Extras to install NGINX $ amazon-linux-extras install nginx1.12 4. Confirm installation $ yum list install nginx After installing the NGINX on the AWS EC2 instance, the next thing that must be done is to configure it against the Oracle GoldenGate (Microservices) environment.

"articleBody" : "In recent years, the data integration/replication space has stared to become crowded. Products like Oracle GoldenGate have become stables inside of organizations, but companies like HVR are chipping away at that marketshare. Since I left Oracle, I’ve been evaluating and looking at some of these data integration/replication tools and I like HVR. HVR provides some of the same concepts as Oracle GoldenGate for moving data; at the same time they are giving a lot more for customers to use. Items like: A hub – A hub in HVR is the central catalog for all the replication channels and enables many of the advanced features within the product. Typically a HVR hub requires that the underlying database to be installed on the same server where the hub process is running. In this blog post, I’ll show you how you can use your existing Oracle Database as the repository for the HVR hub without it needing to install the Oracle Database on the same machine. The software you need for this to be successful is the following: hvr-5.6.5_10-linux_glibc2.5-x64-64bit_ea.tar.gz instantclient-sqlplus-linux.x64-19.6.0.0.0dbru.zip Oracle Enterprise Linux 7.5 or later (really any linux x64-86 machine would do) Build To make this installation simpler and I’m using this in a development environment, so vagrant is my tool of choice. By using Vagrant I can quickly build my linux box by simply saying “vagrant up”. Below is the code that I use for my Vagrant box. # vi: set ft=ruby : require 'yaml' # Vagrantfile API/syntax version. Don't touch unless you know what you're doing! VAGRANTFILE_API_VERSION = 2 #----------------------------------------- # Variables #----------------------------------------- params = YAML.load_file './config/variables.yaml' # Shared var_box_image = params['shared']['box'] var_box_url = params['shared']['url'] # Environment var_name = params['env']['name'] #------------------------------------------- # set virtual machine specific items #------------------------------------------- Vagrant.configure(VAGRANTFILE_API_VERSION) do |config| config.vm.network private_network, :auto_network => true config.vm.box = var_box_image config.vm.box_url = var_box_url config.vm.hostname = var_name config.vm.provider virtualbox do |v| v.name=var_name v.memory = 1024 v.cpus = 2 end # Enable ssh password authentication config.vm.provision shell, inline: <<-SHELL sed -i 's/PasswordAuthentication no/PasswordAuthentication yes/g' /etc/ssh/sshd_config /bin/systemctl restart sshd SHELL config.vm.provision ansible do |ansible| ansible.playbook = ../Playbooks/hvr56_softwareinstall.yaml end end You will notice that at the end of the Vagrant script, I’m making a call to Ansible. This is to install the required software needed for HVR and Oracle Client to work. This only installs the software so I’m not going to share the Ansible code at this time. What I want you to focus on is how to configure the box to use an existing database. Configure With an up and running machine, I want to connect to a database I already have running but is not on the hub machine. In order to do this, I have to configure the HVR user to now where the Oracle binaries are. This is easily done by updating the .bashrc file. Taking a look at the .bashrc file that is configured, you see that there are environment variables for HVR as well as Oracle. export HVR_HOME=/opt/app/hvr56/hvr_home export HVR_CONFIG=/opt/app/hvr56/hvr_config export HVR_TMP=/tmp export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/opt/app/oracle/product/client_19c/lib export TNS_ADMIN=/opt/app/oracle/network/admin export PATH=$HVR_HOME/bin:$PATH By looking at the .bashrc file, you will notice that the LD_LIBRARY_PATH is pointing to the lib directory for the Oracle Instant Client that is installed. Additionally, it is specifying where to find the tnsnames.ora file. Both of these items are key for connecting HVR to the remote database for hub purposes. All the other environment variables that are set are for HVR to use. What needs to be done next, is to create a tnsnames.ora file on the hub machine and ensure that it is in th e$TNS_ADMIN directory. The contents of the tnsnames.ora file I’m using is as follows: [oracle@hvr56-hub admin]$ cat tnsnames.ora HVR = (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 10.20.1.2)(PORT = 1539)) (CONNECT_DATA = (SERVER = DEDICATED) (SERVICE_NAME = hvrpdb1.oracle.com) ) ) Notice that I’m using the pluggable database hvrpdb1.oracle.com (the .oracle.com domain extension is only because I didn’t fix my scripts for building the database). This is the pluggable database that HVR will build its repository catalog once the HVR hub has been registered with the database. Register HVR Hub With the Oracle Instanct Client software installed and the tnsnames.ora file established, now is the time to register the HVR hub with the database. In order to do this, access the server directly via a GUI method. I’m using VNC in this case. Once connected to an xterm or a GUI desktop, open a terminal window and navigate to the $HVR_HOME/bin directory. From here, run the program hvrgui. $ cd $HVR_HOME/bin $ ./hvrgui & This will bring up the GUI environment for HVR but also present you with the dialog box to register the HVR Hub. On the hub registration page, you only need to make sure you select the right radio button under Class for the database that will be used as the repository and the provide connection details to the right of the it. As highlighted at the beginning of the post, Oracle is the database for the repository. I make sure the radio button for Oracle is selected and the provide the details needed. ORACLE_HOME=/opt/app/oracle/product/client_19c TNS=HVR User=hvradmin Password= Once all the settings have been provided, clicking Connect will make the connection to the pluggable database and build the HVR repository catalog. If the repository is already there from an existing build, the tables will be reused. If the tables are not there, then you will be prompted and told that they would be built. Since I’ve already built the repository during testing, the HVR GUI just makes the connection and uses the existing tables. After the repository is built and connected, the HVR GUI changes to show you the it is connected and ready to use. At this point, you can quickly setup your locations, channels and schedule when replication should start while only having a single connection of a repository database. Enjoy!!!",

"articleBody" : "Deployments Deployments are a GoldenGate concept that has been around since 2017. In many cases, it is one of the more difficult things to explain, but when it clicks the concept is great and leads to many complex architectures. For the cloud, Oracle GoldenGate (Microservices) is a great option for moving data in and out of the clouds. I could list many more and maybe I will at some point; however, that is not the point of this post. In this post, we will take a look at how to configured deployments within OCI GoldenGate Service (GGS). After navigating to the GoldenGate page within OCI, there are two locations that can be selected for creating a deployment. The first is in the middle of the page – a button called “create deployment”. The second is under the sub-menu on the left hand side, which makes it easier to access. At this point, we want to select “Deployments” from the sub-menu. After select “Deployments”, we are taken to the “Deployments” page. On this page, we can create a deployment by selecting the “Create Deployment” button. After clicking the “Create Deployment” button, a dialog will open from the right-hand side of the screen. On this dialog, we can provide the General Information for the deployment as well as GoldenGate Details that are needed. At the same time, we can make the choice on what type of licensing we want to use. If you have a support-enabled license of GoldenGate (on-premises – classic or microservices), select BYOL. If you want to use the integrated license + support, select License Included. Note: GoldenGate Service is not a free service and we need to consider what type of license we needed. Clicking Next, we are taken to the GoldenGate Details dialog for the deployment. There is a good bit of information on this screen. The first thing to notice is the “Select a technology” drop down menu. This menu contains all the different versions of GoldenGate that can be used. This includes Oracle plus a few heterogenous options. Select the technology we want to use – in this case, we are going to use Oracle. After selecting the technology we want to use, the next item down is the Version and what technologies are supported. What are displayed here will change depending on what we selected. For Oracle, we are using the latest release of the binaries (Version) and it supports a wide range of Oracle platforms on OCI as well as other clouds. Note: If we wanted to use an older package of GoldenGate – under the “Version” there is a button called “Change Version”. By clicking this button, we are presented with a dialog that has multiple version that can be selected. The last half of the deployment dialog screen, is where we will give the GoldenGate instance a name, provide the admin username and admin password. All these items correspond to details that would be provided for the ServiceManager in an on-premises configuration. The admin username and password will be used to login to the GoldenGate instance once it is up and running. With all the information need provide, we can now click the “Create” button and build the deployment. This will drop us back at the Deployment details page. Once the deployment has been created, we can now access the Console (i.e. ServiceManager page) using the “Launch console” button. With clicking the “Launch deployment” button, we are provided with a extra dialog box that provides us a URL that can be used to go directly to the console in the future. Pay attention to the informational message that is displayed. It is reminding us that the HTML page of the console can only bee accessed from a compute instance using the VCN as this deployment. Meaning that we either have to have a compute instance on the same VCN, a VPN/FastConnect configured, or an OCI Bastion to connect to the web page. Connecting to Console Since we have to have a compute node on the same VCN to access the GGS Console, we will use one of our existing compute nodes. In this case, we will connect to the compute node using VNC. After connecting to a compute node, we opened Firefox and navigated to the URL provided. With the console page open, we will use the GGS admin username and password to access the console page. Upon clicking the “Sign In” button, we are taken to the Admin Service page.",

"articleBody" : "Oracle GoldenGate has been around for nearly thirty years and each year that ticks by more and more innovation is done to improve the product. This means as Oracle GoldenGate matures, the older release of Oracle GoldenGate have to be deprecated and then desupported, over a two year cycle. With Oracle GoldenGate being a heterogeneous product with many different variables in a single architecture, it can be quite confusing on when is the right time to upgrade to the next release. In the past, Oracle GoldenGate upgrades took time and required extensive planning to upgrade. In August 2017, the innovation that Oracle placed in Oracle GoldenGate was a “microservices” frame work that drastically and dynamically increased the flexibility of Oracle GoldenGate with the 12.3.x family. With the release of “microservices”, Oracle also released a “classic (command line)” version of Oracle GoldenGate within the 12.3.x family – this only added more confusion to what version of Oracle GoldenGate to use when upgrading from older version within a heterogenous framework. At the same time this set the horizon for support on the 12.3.x family of Oracle GoldenGate, after all Oracle cannot maintain two distinct code bases of the same product. The strategic direction for Oracle GoldenGate is to move away from the “Classic (command line)” version and build more into the “Microservices” version. This has started to happen with an early deprecation of “Classic” when Oracle GoldenGate 21c was released (here). Meaning that Oracle GoldenGate versions that are associated with the 12.3.x family and below will no longer be getting bug/critical fixes or enhancements in the “Classic” architectures. Leaving many customers looking for migration options to “Microservices”. There are three-ish ways of upgrading Oracle GoldenGate from “Classic” to “Microservices”: Install Oracle GoldenGate (Microservices) in parallel to “Classic” and migrate in parallel Migrate to Oracle GoldenGate (Microservices) within Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Marketpalce Migrate to Oracle GoldenGate Service (GGS) within Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) All three of these approaches can get your organization off of Oracle GoldenGate (Classic) and get you into a long-term supported version of Oracle GoldenGate on-premises or in the cloud! Important dates to keep in mind while evaluating your Oracle GoldenGate migration options: Oracle GoldenGate 12.3.x family (12.3.0.1, 18.1.x, 19.1.x) – Premier Support Ends – April 2024 (less than a year), Extended Support Ends April 2027 (will go by quickly) Oracle GoldenGate 12.2.x releases (12.2.0.1.x) – Premier Support Ended – December 2020, Extended Support Ends – December 2023 (this year) Oracle GoldenGate 12.1.x and earlier (12.1.x and earlier) – Premier Support and Extended Support has already expired. Call us and we can help you get to or maintain the platform All this information can be found in the Oracle Lifetime Support document for Middleware products (here). "articleBody" : "Sometimes, you just want to run NGINX in unsecure mode (over port 80) for internal environments. The steps here are similar to what I posted some time ago in this post -> here. I’ll put these steps here as well and highlight (bold) which steps were different. 1. SSH into the RedHat instance $ ssh @ 2. Sudo to Root $ sudo su – 3. Install and confirm installation of Nginx $ dnf -y install nginx && dnf list install nginx After installing NGINX, the next thing to do is to configure it against Oracle GoldenGate. Configure NGINX 1. Go to the Reverse Proxy directory under $OGG_HOME $ cd $OGG_HOME/lib/utl/reverseproxy 2. Run ReverseProxySettings with options (NO SSL) $ ./ReverseProxySettings -u oggadmin -P —-no-ssl -o ogg.conf http://localhost: 3. Copy the config file to NGINX directory $ sudo cp ogg.conf /etc/nginx/conf.d/nginx.conf 4. Remove or rename the default configuration file $ cd /etc/nginx/conf.d $ mv ./default.conf ./_default.con_ 5. Start NGINX $ sudo nginx & 6. Test NGINX config $ sudo nginx -t 7. Reload NGINX $ sudo nginx -s reload 8. Access ServiceManager and other services without port numbers Open a web browser and navigate to the URL, something similar to this: http://:80 End Result With NGINX configured, you can now access Oracle GoldenGate on port 80. In the example below, we are using a SecureLink connection and the port numbers are off, but the last two digits are the important ones. They show that we are using Port 80 for the connection.",
